Post Repairing rusted wheels
I have 5 wheels of the old 400 type. These are hard to find. The problem I have is that when I started to remove rust, I discovered that they are quite rusted, and in fact two is rusted through around the tyre valve hole and those, pluss an additional one, are badly pitted all along the inside where the tyres have been sitting against the steel. Only two wheels are in okay shape, although one of the two was badly dented. But I seem to have straightened it okay with a big hammer and a block of wood.

If it was 15 or 16", I'm sure a wheel specialist could remove the center section, and put on new rims. But the 400 rims are a bit odd-ball I suspect.

Anyone on here heard of any way of restoring rust damaged rims? Welding and grinding, safe or unsafe?

when I did the old van, I bought three rims from these guys,
https://www.ami-2cv.com/ not cheap even then!
I'd cut out and weld in any bits that are too far gone if I had to. The inner tube on these big wheels helps and you won't be drag racing it ...will you? so balancing isn't an issue  .

I did clean mine up, put a rusttransformer on it. Primered it, fill the pitting on the inside of the rims to have a smooth surface for the tubes. They are some 30 years back on the car now. And yes the firm mentioned by Rob is rather expensive...

Around the valve hole cut/drill it out and weld a washer in?

Thanks for your replies. Yeah, I know that company, it's good to have a company that does things the others doesnt. Like supplying hard to find stuff. But yeah, those rims are a bit too much.
Annoying that somebody I know here in Norway threw a set of these on the dump a few years back as he thought nobody wanted them because of the expensive tires. Damn.
I bought 5 for 75 euros last summer. But two are just to far gone. Maybe. And the rest needs lots of attention. Good to hear that AZL58 did smoot them out and it's been working for years. I'll probably go the same route.

Funny thing is they have rusted completely different as all the 15" wheels I've had. Newer 2CV wheels rust between the center and rim, but look almost like new on the part facing the tire.
These old ones however, are looking perfect on the outside and between the center and rim. But the rust is all on the part facing the tire. Must be because of the use of an inner tube trapping moisture between the inner tube and rim? I dont know.

I will check with a welding specialist company here. They can restore damaged axles by welding them up and then grinding down to specs for mounting bearings and stuff. Maybe its possible to weld all the pitting, and then mount the rims in a lathe and cut down to the correct size. But might be more expensive than better old ones.....

Well, when driving my 2CV, I'm not one to turn down a challenge at the traffic lights! It's a crowd pleaser
