Post Re: Flickering Headlights and Stereo Clicking
My voltage has been really nice and steady, but earlier it went up to this for a bit. When I shut the engine down after stopping it returned to about 12.5 as you'd expect.

Before I check with Roy at Ecas, is this normal do you guys think? If so I will leave it. Other than that everything seems better.

Probably the Voltage Regulator ground.

Check you have a good ground on the voltage regulator. I think the vr was originally located on the battery, but some may have been moved to the bulkhead. Often, if attached to the bulkhead, the ground wire is grounded with a screw that holds the bracket. This can corrode after time.

At the battery, check there is a good ground to the body/chassis of the car.

Is the vr OEM or solid state?

Ta Roger. Its Burton one, solid state I would assume.

I'll check that seperate ground tomorrow, hadn't thought to follow the lead form the VR. I did renew a ground right near there the other day but it may not be the actual VR. If it is, the VR is faulty because that particular ground is as new. New connector, bare clean metal and so on.

I'll double check though, thanks!

Well we checked a couple things, the main earth lead is very secure. I will remove it to clean and reattach, but other than that, did take out the fuses and clean the conatcts. Also the connector for the VR, cleaned it out because it looked midly crusty.

It actually hasn't done that 17 volts thing since that one journey anyway. But after this fannying around, the voltage on the way home was amazingly stable.

We couldn't figure out which colour would be the earth lead from the VR connector.

The stereo definitely doesn't click any more which is great!

Sorry Roger I should've clarified, the VR is on a bracket on the bulkhead, but the three wires go off into the wiring loom. From there I can't tell any more because it's all sealed up. Perhaps it would be worth me finding out which is the earth wire on the connector, cutting it, and connecting it to a nice new earth I have nearby.
My boss didn't know how to find which was the earth though.

The procedure would be. With a multimeter set to ohms (continuity)
Unplug the VR. Attach one probe to the negative on the battery, use the other probe in the wiring harness connector to see which one registers on the meter.

Also check the VR connector where it joins the harness. Make sure the pins and sockets are clean. Same as you did with the fuses.

However, saying all that, if the volt gauge is now stable, what do you need to fix! :) Maintenance is obviously not a bad thing though. :D

Oh easy, thanks! Surprised boss didn't know that, he's a whizz at electrics normally.

I will check it, maintenance is definitely a good thing. This little buggy has weathered many a storm and never missed a beat, the last thing I would want is not to be able to trust it late one night on the M5.
