Part of its character :)
I just bit the bullet, and bought some (+ nuts) from ecas. Added them to an order. I'm glad to just be able to pick one out of my new spares box :)

Maybe a myth ...Lambretta and Lamborghini used them.
A thought by using M7 in place of M8 the weight saved would be about 12.5% less for the total of bolts used, perhaps a weigh in between M7/M8 for QED.

I didn't know about Lamborghinis but Piaggio used them on Vespas. Also I remember replacing a damaged gearbox casing on a Talbot Samba Cabriolet* in the 80s: all the bolts holding the casings together were long M7s. (*Same engine/box as used in Peugeot 104, some 205, some Visa, early BX14, Renault 14, etc).

And have used PSA diesel engines on some Disco's and Range. TDV6, based on HDi V6, both 2,7 and 3,0 engines used... And not with any problems, the 2,7 is known of it's habit to have crankshaft split...

M7 bolts I have seen also on Russian motorcycles and BMW engines in their inlet manifolds about 1980-1990 models...

How about M7 vs. 1/4" UNF..?

1/4" UNF is smaller (6.35mm) and finer thread (0.9mm) than M7x1.0.

M7 are used for galvanised fence wire strainers - but I wouldn't dream of using the nuts on a car.

I get all mine here, super cheap, all sized, all grades inc zinced, stainless, socket head... They're happy to sell 1 or 2 so you don't have to buy hundreds too.
