5 year old battery - This morning, car started, good spin on the starter, went to market, stop, re-started all OK, then went to the shops, stop start all OK. Next stop and no start, not enough battery to even light the oil warn light. Used jump leads to bypass existing battery leads, no difference. Shorted out the battery with the legs of a pair of pliers, battery was a flat as a pancake !
OK, recovered the car by using the ride on mower 12v battery - even that one started the car !
Took battery off the car and put it on intelligent charger, selected recovery and after 6 hours it read 100%. Put it on the car - Nadah! Still flat. I am assuming the internals of the battery have collapsed.
Just a clue - Yesterday, used the car to get petrol, filled up and gauge read just over 1/2 full - just thought it was a bad connection somewhere. Today using the mower battery and gauge shows Full.
By the way, obvious points.
Cables all good
Battery terminals clean - wire brushed and re-checked clean.
Sealed battery - so can't top up electrolyte.
Little "eye" showed green indicating electrolyte correct.
Tomorrow, buy a new battery

Modern batteries, do not seem to last.

Replacement for my VW van, wouldn't hold charge at 3 years old.

Had a green eye, more like red eye!

Did you check the other ends of the battery cables?

Bye the way "intelligent" chargers. I had an almost empty battery and the charger didn't recognise it as a battery. So it didn't charge. I hooked it on an antique heavy old charger on with full force. And than it did work again...

Don't have mower battery details - but Lead acid, 12v and about 30Ah (ride on mower with non original battery).
Fitted new 45Ah battery and now all back to normal.

Just in case the alternator did it,
measure the actual battery voltage
without load, should be more than 12V.
With engine running at 2.000rpm
Should be no more than 14,4Volts. ;)
