Hi all. I sometimes get this noise that sounds just like the noise when the rear lower part of the front wings catch on the suspension arms at times. I've had that happen plenty but new wings recently and they don't catch. To make extra sure, I drove the car without wings and was able to still get that clank noise randomly.

It seems a bit random really. I seemed to get rid of it a while ago but it came back and then went away again. Other times I can sail over speedbumps in the normal fashion.

Is this a common thing that happens?

Check out the shock absorber nuts, and the side plates with the three nuts that close off the arm pivot bearing.

Grease the knife edges. Veg oil in the suspension tubes. :D

I shall check those out Roger, thank you. Apart from the side plates you mentioned, I can't think what they look like. I'm sure it'll be obvious when I look.

Do the shock absorber nuts come loose or something?

The suspension tubes have been lubricated from time to time by me as I got the creaky donkey noise years ago.

rubber bushes in the schock absorbers might deteriorate.

It's not raining today, its nice to be able to lay on the ground again.

I can't see anything amiss. I do like these knife rod joints, they are kind of attractive aren't they.

Only one thing I can see is that the plastic covers slide back on the shock absorbers on the front. They are about 10 years old I think. The drivers side does shock look to have leaked a bit inside the cover. Can't see it making this clank noise but I might stick a new pair on it soon.

Where the shocks mount at the front sides, is extremely close to the knife rod joint mounts. I guess that doesn't matter as they move together?

I thought the drivers side shock mount (front end of front shock) was at a slight angle but I see the other side is the same so its probably normal.

I have diluted some grease with engine oil and worked it into the knife rod joints with a paintbrush. Very satisfying job.

I can't move the shocks, the bushings seem fine.

My guess, grease the driveshafts and the sound will be gone.

Thanks Eirik. Was on my list of things to do but I didn't get time.

They were well greased a couple times recently but the last was October. Last time I did them it did seem to stop the noise, but it's so random it's hard to tell.

I went and found some speed bumps after clean and lube of knife edges. No noise yet but we'll see..

New front shocks, wow it feels so different. Burton ones. I didn't put them on, it was in for exhaust manifold blowing again anyway. The old ones were about 10 years old, one I could see was leaking and on both front ones. The covers had come loose on each and could be slid up and down.

The whole car feels so much tighter, wasn't expecting that.

Lovely to drive (was anyway but even more now) and no clank as yet.

Fingers crossed then.
