A kind friend (you know who you are, Bob) gave me a pair of old Michelin M&S+ 125 tyres. These are nailed (studded) tyres.

We just a had a thick fall of snow and the forecast is that it will be around for a few days.

I'm contemplating trying them out. It would mean having 125s at the front and 135s at the rear, but I doubt whether that would affect the handling at 25 mph, and I don't suppose anyone would notice.

My question is, how effective are nailed tyres in soft snow? Are they really designed for ice instead?

And no, I'm not entirely sure they are still legal. I'm more concerned about how old they are.....

At snow, they help practically nothing. On ice, you can't imagine teh difference...

And, if You have studded tires at front, You can have long drifting sessions. But without practising, You will find Your rear end going ahead...

Can't say anything about legality there, but here is forbidden to have studs only on other axle, only on all tires or not at all. That is for safety reasons...

In the old tyres were studs that had to come out. A hell of a job some 50+ in each tyre. And paying attention not pierce the tyre with the pointed screwdriver that is used to wedge them out.
