Eek, I sort of broke down. The ONE TIME I ever drive without tools too...

Went round a roundabout, then it started popping and banging and hesitating until I pulled over.
It starts and idles fine, but any kind of revs or power and it starts kangarooing.

I did manage to nurse it home so I didn't have to wait for recovery.

I can't look at it, I've no time. Any obvious suspects?

It has the Harley style coil. Good leads. But I did use petrol from a Jerry can that might've been two years old. I've nearly used it all now. I have a see through filter and it looks good inside. Car hasn't been run for a month or so before this.

I'm puzzled. First thing I'll do is fill it with his fuel and change the plugs. I've no idea why it just suddenly started doing this though.

Possibly a fuel issue.

I had those symptoms a few years back, and it was the short fuel hose from the tank to the main fuel line.

It could just be dodgy fuel as you suggest though.

Sucking air through a perished fuel line is quite possible, but check that your advance and retard mechanism is working freely. (Assuming it's not fully electronic).

Thank you guys. I'll check out those hoses. When I fill it with nice fuel.

Would a faulty condenser do something like this do you think?

If it's on points, a capacitor which is failing would cause this fault.
Very easy to check, using one of these...

Thanks Ken. Yes standard points, replaced a couple years ago but not by me. I can't seem to grasp the points on these. Accessing them is fine but they're so weird to the uninitiated.

Is capacitor the same as condensor? If so I've ordered a couple from Roy as useful to have spares anyway.

The sudden arrival of this problem makes me think it's this.

Hope Ken doesn't mind me butting in: but yes, condenser/capacitor same thing. Commonly called a condenser, but correctly a capacitor.

The points are simple, just one set which fire the spark plug on both cylinders at the same time. One pot fires when the piston is near the top of its compression stroke, whilst the other piston is near the top of its exhaust stroke. A system known as 'wasted spark'.

Thanks.

A test for the condenser, is to see if the points are arcing a lot when the engine is idling. :)
