Looking on other car forums it seems common practice to fit a higher out put alternative alternator. As other classic cars are often modified with electric cooling fans & so on.

I'm having trouble finding one to replace 30amp the Iskra 11201021 2cv alternator.

What so they replaced it with on the other forums?

I'm guessing you want the extra watts for your stereo you mention in another thread.

Out of curiosity, did you fit your BMW engine? :)

Remanufactured 55amp lucas A127 type alternators are available as a replacement for the old 36amp original.

Yes, problems started with all electrics cutting out for a few seconds when the stereo was up loud for any length of time. I'm not using the stereo as after around 10 minutes the alternator stops charging. Put on a new voltage regulator, but no different.

BMW engine is partly refurbished, but two motorcycle projects I'm doing are in the way. I've got the 50 amp BMW alternator but it's a completely different fit.

With regard to not charging, is the stereo robbing the exciter coils of volts/amps somehow?

Odd how the alternator shows no fault with basic multimeter tests, but now only works for a short time.

Is it because heat is causing expansion and breaking a contact?

Do Visa alternators put out more? Or rather, is there an advantage to be had in fitting one?

Yes, a bit. 35 ampere, if I remember right. Also it has internal voltage regulator and warning lamp. What I have experienced, the internal regulator will fail, thanks to hot mounting point on exhaust, but it is easy to make little mod to have the external regulator, what I have made on my EFI-Dyane...

Also it is quite easy to use GS 40 A alternator. Same issues with internal regulator when used on 2CV. I have this on my 4x4 Dyane, modified to external regulator, and made a small "adapter" of 20x20mm tube for M7 mounting, because it is at a different place and needed also to make adjustmenn mounting point longer and 20mm further...

With 40 A alternator, it is possible to have twin headlights, small refridgerator and all EFI-equipment without any worrying about charging. Of course, at idle and very low RPM it behaves just like original, doens't charge enough, but over 2000 RPM charging is at full...
