Found out in a hot rod shop there are one wire alternators that literally have one wire to the battery and are grounded at the mounting. Easy to install, everything built in. Don't know on a 2cv, because of the mounting point, if heat from the exhaust will be a problem. Also I've heard the tiny, lightweight Nippon Denso 45amp racing alternator has been fitted.

Thanks for the tip Roger, "heat is causing expansion and breaking a contact" £2.99 for some new Iskra type alternator brushes (including first class post) & it's charging as normal again. That will have to do for the short term. Just can't play the stereo and have the lights on at the same time. :?

Do Visa alternators put out more? Or rather, is there an advantage to be had in fitting one?

Visa alternators have higher output. They also have a delay before they produce charge, I believe, so its not taking power off engine when starting.

I've been using a Visa alternator since 2004 with no problems.

You have to remove 2CV voltage regulatoe and fit a diode over the outer contacts tho otherwise engine will not stop when ignition is turned off!
