Post Coil heat
having had starting problems when hot, I've fitted a new coil. Starts great, hot or cold, but I opened the bonnet after a long run and the coil was very hot. Is this normal?

They will get warm, but should not get hot.
If you have points ignition, it could be to much dwell.

By "Too much dwell" does this indicate that the cam which opens the points has lost its profile?

Bobh, it's much more likely that the points gap is too small.
I use a dwell meter to adjust the gap with the engine running, rather than relying solely on a static setting with feeler gauges.

So, what sort of dwell meter would you use on a 2cv as most meters are 4/6 or 8 cylinder. Can you use the 4 cylinder setting and divide by (er? 4). ?

Yes, use the 4-cyl setting but divide by two

Actually it's the same setting as for 4-cylinder,
due to the "waste spark" ignition system.
