Simple question, probably not a simple answer.

2CV6, dish brakes. Why do a gearbox, under load, make a high pitched whining noise in fourth gear between 75 and 85 kmh? (46 to 53 mph) But not above or under?
Third gear is noiseless, first and second the "normal" whining.

EirikJ,
in my experience, that seems to be a 'characteristic' of the later (Portuguese assembled 2CV) gearboxes.
Not too sure why that would be, since it doesn't seem to affect their longevity, but it is irritating, since you've got to endure that whine every time the car passes through that speed range.

p.s. Normally, you'd have expected the cause to be the 6205NR bearing on the input shaft, which is under more load in 4th gear...

I can attest to that, Ken. Mine has always whined around those speeds. I've had the car since 2002 and it was on 70,100 miles when bought. It's now on 258k miles and still whining like a gud un. It actually clicked over to that mileage on the M6 in Cumbria on the way down from Aberdeen to Worcester yesterday. 450 miles in total. No driving has done today, but I have (so far) walked 12 miles around Worcester.
