I know they don't have rails, but it is in that area that we did find an number unexpectingly in my friends azu.

It is the same system I have in my 1974 250 .
The chassisnumber in my van is in the floorpanel Rh a few cm. before the left "leg"of the rh seat .
You will probably need sanding paper to find traces of the original number.
Our 1965 2CV AZ had the number on the same spot. We found traces of the number, but the rest was rusted and faded .

So the chassis number could be somewhere here then?

The paint has now probably got to 2mm thick and I don't think I want to take very much of it off.

Wrong corner, Dennis, you need to lift the rubber mat and look in the footwell, just in front of the passenger seat, assuming your vehicle is LHD.
.
So, just as Geert has advised "in the RH floorpanel, a few cm. before the left leg of the RH seat". ;)
.
I'd also agree that they're usually poorly defined, since the stamping invariably looks as though it's been done without any backing...

p.s. 2mm thickness of paint? Did the tin getted knocked over?

What are the two threaded holes down the centreline of the floor panel ? Also, my AZU (With new chassis) doesn't have the angle strip between the front floor and rear cross member/rear floor and the two bolts.

Here we go :
Pictures taken from Rh side door !
ImageChassisnumber 2 by geert1953, on Flickr
ImageChassisnumber 3 by geert1953, on Flickr

There might be a small dent visible , where the chassisnumber is stamped.

That is not part of the chassis, it is part of the body, if we talk about the same "strip ".

Mmm, I think I should clean the inside of the van, it does not look so bright as yours does .

Thanks Geert - I've looked and the floor is in poor condition just there. I'll risk scraping the paint off at some time (OK, 2mm of paint might be an exaggeration, but there's at least as much paint as metal in some places) and see what I find.

It's not worth posting the pictures I took - they were difficult shots and they don't seem to show anything, certainly not a dent like on Geert's. I have a carpet down on top of the rubber, and I can't remove it completely without taking the seats out again, and I can't do that without moving all the cars around (again).......

I'm not entirely sure about the threaded holes, Bob, but I think they were once the fixings for a large frame that supported a front bench seat that was in the car when I got it. The bench seat could be slid forward and back a little on the fixed frame. The previous owner also supplied me with the original separate seats, which I reinstated.
