I've a niggling fault with the Red Spesh. I do a regular run over a small hill: up hill quite steeply for about 3/4 mile, then downhill for about a mile. Nearly at the top there's a T-junction where you always have to stop, still sloping up hill, then leave after a hill-start. At this point the engine often, but not always, simply dies. It'll restart with no trouble. It's a standard late 602 with 1-2-3 ignition, and it starts well, runs well, has no flat spots, pulls well on hills, moderate fuel consumption - in fact a very nice drive at all times. On the downhill sections I usually coast down in neutral, and at the bottom the engine is still ticking over. But on a hot day, and obviously with a warm engine after coming up the hill, in 3rd gear or sometimes in 2nd, it has this tendency to just die when I take my foot off the accelerator and put it on the brake. I can live with this, obviously, but I'd really like to know what the problem might be. Any ideas/ suggestions? |

check your fuelpump or the filter in the tank. |

+1 Also , general condition of the fuel pipe from tank to carb. |

Also check float heights in carb and state of needle valve as might be using all the fuel in the bowl if they are too low and not being replenished fast enough if you have nailed it up the hill.... |

i had the same, one valve in my fuelpump got stuck. |

A steep hill followed by a stop would point at carb and the float levels or dirt. |

That's the one I'd go for, with a perished section of rubber hose at the fuel tank end of the line being the first choice. An uphill drag, so high fuel demand with more 'lift' required by the pump will show up any air leak at the junction of the fuel pipe and the tank... Thanks to you all. I'll get underneath and drop the tank and check the pipes there. I think if it were a problem between the pump and the carb I'd be able to see that there was a petrol leak: that bit's under pressure. The rear section that is under a partial vacuum sounds much more likely. Is there really a filter in the tank? You live and learn..... |

I'm reliably told there is one on the end of the pick-up tube. |

Dennis wrote: Is there really a filter in the tank? You live and learn.....  What you can see on the end of the tube, is the filter... On early cars (DS, can't recall sure for 2cv) it was different, a pile of brass "washers" where fuel went between those "washers" to the tube... |
