Verify the oil level, or better the quantity.

Flat surface measurement on the dipstick and a known quantity of oil going in.....

I've now got a compression tester - any ideas people on what sort of figures I should be seeing on my 652cc which I think is 8.5:1?

My 652cc conversion runs well, is reasonably economical - 40-42mpg - but on a long run seems to burn a lot of oil - we have come over to West Wales and it has lost around 500ml in 180 miles but pottering around here has used none - is it something to do with running at higher road speeds and engine revs

Is it a fresh conversion? If so, it can lose oil on high revs. I had same kind of "issue" on one engine (Dnepr 650cc, flat twin), practically straight from rebuild and it lost about 2,5 litres on 70 km when driven too fast (about 100-140km/h). And when decided to have a different route, where couldn't drive over 80 km/h the engine didn't burn oil at all...

And after decent run-in, the oil consumption disappeared after some time, and it could be driven quite fast without problems anymore...

Nels,
From Burton's site...
"Barrel and piston set, Big Bore 2CV6 652cc, 9.0:1"

Also, this advice. ( Proofreading foc, solely to correct spelling errors. )
"This cylinder kit needs to be run in.
We advise you to not drive faster than 80 km/h or 4,000 rpm for the first 2,000 kms.
After this period, steadily increase your speed.
Only after a careful running-in period will your engine reach its full power potential."

p.s. With a standard camshaft and cylinder heads, you'd be looking at 175 psi, with engine warm and 'wide open throttle'...

Thanks Ken - mine is an earlier Burton @8.5:1 - tbh I didn't run it in like that and went for accelerate/slow method.
Done the test - 100psi both - did an oil test test and both went up to 220/225psi so new rings required - went like stink whilst still had oil in the cylinders so fairly conclusive that I fucked up the installation!
