Post subject:  Alternator Noise

Hi all
Alternator is making a noise, but if I remove the exciter wire, the noise stops!
Is this normal?
Cheers

Removing the exciter lead will cause a loss of demand, therefore the alternator will be under no load. When under load, it is likely to produce a sort of moan, which will alternate when the Voltage Control Regulator cuts the alternator in and out.

Unless the noise is that of a worn bearing. Depends on what sort of noise you are hearing.

Thanks Derek
Moaning is a good description.. So that would appear normal then. As I have a spare that needs attention, I may recondition one of them and see if that helps. I have so much noise and vibration from the engine/gearbox that I will keep picking at it and replacing/reconditioning parts.
Thanks again :)
