 Rubber gaiters Why is todays rubber rubbish? I bought new drive shafts (SKF manufacture), the gaiters lasted less than 5 years before splitting. Similarly, the boot at the bottom of the steering column - 7 years, the rubber suspension bands in the seats - 7 years. Don't even ask about the gear lever grommets or the gaiter. Even the pedal rubbers perished after about 10,000km.
What's going on ?

Re: Rubber gaiters I read somewhere that they save money by using less actual rubber in the mix. I can't remember what they supposedly put in instead.
You're not wrong, I do a lot of stuff on Mercedes, and MB rubber parts are really expensive. Or you can buy the super cheap aftermarket. Guess which one will last 20 or 30 years as opposed to maybe as little as 6 months!
Such a shame, as all the work that goes into changing some of these parts is wasted and then needs doing again. And some of them fail catastrophically, even writing off the car in one case I know of.
The market seems to have been flooded with extremely bad quality parts.

Re: Rubber gaiters also the type of rubber should be right for the job it has to do. If you just take the wrong type it might desintegrate sooner...i had a new engine vent rubber that just lasted 3 months...
But i also had parts that were used 50 years and still ok..

Re: Rubber gaiters So what can we do, It would seem un-reasonable to expect the supplier to replace these components, but is it unreasonable? The parts have not given an expected life and are "Unfit for purpose"
Next time you buy "rubber parts" Note the date, keep the receipt, then bitch about it if it fails in an unreasonable time. (whatever you are using these rubber parts for !!)

Re: Rubber gaiters Who sells the neoprene gaiters and do they do all the other ones - like demister vent, gear-lever and handbrake ones. I notice that 2CVclub have changed the design of the floor/steering column gaiter to include a nylon bush for the column to rotate in.
