I've measured a 13A (current) with engine running and all lights and radio on!

So I've just placed a 4mm2 wire in parallel with the yellow one and lowered the load.

Roger,
the engine & gearbox assembly is isolated from the chassis by rubber mounts to limit vibration and noise transmission, however there's a path for current to flow between it and the chassis/body unit via the driveshafts and suspension arms, isn't there?

Probably best if that 'stray current' was kept to a minimum, mind you...

Just as i thought. And as you say, it will find away back if it can.

Thanks Ken (everyone)

Earth strap has arrived. Not fitted because have been dealing with the oil leak.
I probably won't notice any difference when I do, but I will know it has one. :D

Then there's the charging issue to sort out!

Earth strap fitted
Charge appears to have raised to 14.4v at the battery
Voltage indicator on the dash is still in the grey zone!
Hmmm

Hmmm

You could do with a new voltage indicator I guess.
Or did you swap it already ?

Roger,
14.4 volts should be fine as the target charging voltage for a lead-acid battery, although any higher than that and the battery will start to 'gas'.

As Geert has already advised, I'd trust your multimeter rather than the original dash-mounted voltmeter in the car, which can lose its accuracy with time...
