Just a thought Ian, is your breather jet in place? Dead centre of the front of the carb.

I thought that was the slow running/idle jet ;)

It was loose and fell out on my sister's car causing similar issues to you. Wouldn't idle, lots of revs needed to move and no power. And about 10mpg!

Sooo, I took the top off the carb and it wasn't scary at all.

I changed the gasket after removing the axle of the floats. The float levels seemed OK to me but what do I know. I looked it up online and saw the floats should measure 18mm from centre of float to the gasket - one was fine but the other wasn't within the 1mm difference recommended. So I made them as close as I could and buttoned it back up.

There was a bit of sediment in the bottom of the bowls which i cleaned out. I was surprised as the float levels were supposedly adjusted when the car went to the guy who was meant to me the solution to all my problems. (But ended up cocking up everything he did.)

For this reason I suspect he might have fitted the 107 jet badly or something. But I don't know which one that is. I checked the jet in the bowl wasn't loose and it was fine. I took it out and blew through it, it was clear anyway.

The two screws in the front of the carb body are in place Richard. I did fanny about with the idle mixture screw and it *may* have made a difference? That has a history of wobbling itself out of adjustment - but doesn't it only affect idle?

As it is the car still seems to have a pretty bad hesitation - but seemingly less smoke. So slight yay.

No idea what else to try. Could the points be suspect? They were renewed around the same time as the 107 jet. The car still starts instantaneously in any weather.

I have to drive a very elderly lady to hospital in it tomorrow so I will see how it goes then.

Oh and I changed the spark plugs just in case - they were a great colour and not fouled at all so that's reassuring.

Timing?
Probably not if it starts well,

The primary jet, which you mention was changed to 107 is attacked using a long screwdriver and tweezers or a cocktail stick through the blanking plug at the 2pm position in your above photo.

What state is the engine in?
