I'm about to replace the valve stem seals ( I first asked about this a couple of years ago! Still haven't done it!)

In this youtube video. Why is the guy putting PTF tape around the valve stem? And does it really take that much hammering to get it in place? He's taken the spring collar off before installing. Is this the correct way to do it?
thanks for comments.

The PTFE tape is to protect the lip of the seal as it passes the groove for the collets.

Seems a bit of a ballache to get the tape off afterwards.

I thought the seals from ECAS used to come with a sleeve to perform the same function, but that maybe a 'false' memory.

Thanks Knightley. Obvious when someone pints it out to you!

Think when I did it, I put oil on the seal and the valve ( without PTFE) and yes they need to be hit to get them onto the head

Oh no, they don't... ;)
An M10 or M11 deep socket, depending on make, will do the job with a firm, steady push.
Also there's really no need to @rse around removing and refitting that little spring on each seal.

p.s. Knightley's memory is fine, 'fitting sleeves' always used to be included with every seal kit and it was worth keeping hold of them for use with those kits which don't have them.

Merci Beaucoup a tous!

Ken, I thought the guy was making more of it! my preliminary investigations led me to believe that it wasn't going to be quite a "push fit" but not the amount of hammerwork the guy in the video was doing, but if there was a laod of PTF tape perhaps it need more whacking 'cos it all got puckered up!
