did you possibly hit the mass connector of the speedo cluster?

That's possible. I have not fiddled with removing the cover since the other day.

So is the windscreen washer button preventing from the cover being removed first?

I thought the cover had to come off first in order to get to the speedometer? Actually unless I can get a sweet deal on a speedometer that reads in MPH, I don't have any reason to remove it. Just trying to get the cover off so I can do some troubleshooting.

If I remember correctly for the big type speedometer, it comes off together with the plastic cover, so you have to loosen the speedometer cable, or pull it gently in to the cabin, to get the plastic cover and speedometer unit out enough to get a hand behind to loosen the cable from the speedometer, and the electrical connections.

Maybe this site can help:

I'll give that a shot.

By the way, forgot to even post a photo of what the speedometer looks like using a LED bulb. Quite impressive I think.

Oh, was forgetting you have the cool version of the speedo. I have the little boring rectangular one.

The little speedo is by far the coolest. Much more in keeping with the character and philosophy of the car. The big speedo from the Ami looks ungainly and out of place.

I'd just like to find a good one that reads in MPH without having to pay a kings ransom. You know since the US and UK are the only countries stilling using MPH.

All the good ones that read in MPH on Ebay.UK are quite expensive The ones that seem reasonably priced are all knackered.

I like the bigger one for its sense of occasion at higher speeds.
Always found the ammeter an odd extra considering the rest of the car though.

The figures are on the glass you can make sticker-figures to put on. The ones that are on it now can be washed off with water...
