The amazing design of the 2cv still holds for me , and still relevant today , an economical vehicle for the masses , maybe more so in these fraught times ?,
Or have we never had it so good ?, indeed I grew up with a outdoor sh*t house and the tin tub bath in the kitchen , milk and essential food delivered by horse and cart
( and yes I can ride a 1cv :) ) indeed they were the original 4 x 4's

Getting back to the topic header , The 2CV and it’s variants why is no syncro on first gear , the hub cone is there but not the synco spring ring ?,
Just curious being a ex owner of a Renault 4 , 750cc with it's 3 speed gearbox ,

I believe it's only to protect the gears from clumsy changes.
Just like the reverse.

thanks for your thoughts Taskos, agree on on no sychro on reverse gear , even my sad sack Opel dosn't have that , but why does the 70,s onwards 2cv's have the expensive hub cone fitted to first gear but not the cheap snap ring ? is it because as you say after problems due to clumsy 1st gear changes at high speeds leading to warranty claims ?
next time I have a agearbox apart ,I will try to fit the missing snap ring
from distant memory it's the same size as as either 2nd or 3rd snap ring

Why not just embrace the quirkiness if owning a 2CV?

Definitely a distant memory.
The outer diameter of 2nd/3rd gear synchromesh clips is 'around' 60% of one which would activate the cones for 1st gear...
