Once again, another question that come to mind. I'm working in the control room today and the plant is running smooth so I don't have anything better to do than post questions that comes to mind. Tomorrow I'm in packaging so I may disappear for awhile...

I'm always cautious of what I put in my car's gearboxes, probably more so than what I put in the engine. I don't know why. Maybe because I've yet to ruin an engine using the wrong oil but have had more trouble with manual gearboxes than engines.

I've owned half a dozen Fiats and every one of them except for my Yugo has has come with worn syncronizers. Apparently from where people have used GL-5 instead of GL-1 90 weight out of ignorance. GL-1 can be found at any tractor store in the United States but not that common at autopart stores since it's not commonly used in automotive gearboxes. But widely used in Ford tractors.

When I got my Trabant, the manual said to use HLP 68 which I had never heard of. When I tried looking for it in the US, I couldn't find it. After extensive searching and cross referencing other oils, I discovered AW 68 is the same thing also used hydraulic systems in heavy machinery. It's basically just a mineral oil with zinc additives.

So I want to play it safe with my 2CV. So far I cannot find this GL-4 80/90 at any autopart store.

I did however find it in US gallon form on Amazon with free shipping which sounds reasonable. This is 85/90 EP so I suppose it's safe to use?

Like I said in another post, I don' t want to sound cheap but I try to avoid buying something overseas if I can get here because of the exchange rate and shipping costs. Especially something like gear oil.

I may have mentioned this but when I order Trabant parts from Germany, a 2 KG package costs me $US 55 minimum and I think $10 for each additional KG. Shipping from the UK is not as expensive as other European countries. Hungary seems to be the cheapest and fastest for some odd reason.

GL-4 is fine. Never use GL-5.

... and try looking for 75W90 GL4 grade, maybe even straight 80 or 90 in GL4 grade.

GL-4? Wow, even more complication to be aware of. Thanks for the pointer though, hadn't even heard of that one.

I'm not sure why GL-4 seems elusive here in the US. I actually Googled GL-4 and most of the websites that sold it were in the UK.

It maybe the same article just posted that GL-5 is supposed to be a suitable replacement for GL-4 but it's really not.

I'm trying to find something in the meantime I can buy (off the shelf) because I'm concerned about how much oil is actually in the gearbox.

Lucas oil makes some really great products:

It doesn't say whether it's GL-4 or GL-5 but the MSDS mentions it contains sulfur so I probably should stick to plain old GL-4.
