Can't really comment on modern paints, but my limited experience has been that preparation is the secret to a good respray.

After a disaster of re-spraying the AZU van - paint lifting off the undercoat and undercoat not adhering to rattle can zinc spray, I have decided to strip back and get a paint shop to re-spray. Any ideas as to what product to put onto prepared surfaces to protect them against surface rust before paint-shop prep. i was thinking along the lines of Jenolite type product which would acid etch and help bite into rust. Answering my own question, I have stripped all the topcoat (Dupont IMRON) off with a Karcher pressure washer and just using water. Didn't need to use a water / grit blast. The van is now in for a professional fee-spray. BobH |

I've read good things about epoxy primers - they seal and prime pretty much any surface, and is very hard and tough; highly resistant to corrosion, cracking flaking and stuff. Very strong adherence too, and it 'creeps' in to all fine surface scratches and bonds tight. 2-part product, but doesn't kill you dead like 2-pack top coats. I don't think... Anybody used this? |

Use of an Etch primer is essential on bare metal. it is very thin and creeps into joints etc. Be very careful if you have used any galvanised metal and especially if you have used any galvanising spray paint. take advice from your paint supplier. |
