 Gearbox noise 3rd gear

Post Gearbox noise 3rd gear
Hi everyone :)

I have just fitted a Dyane engine and gearbox to a 2CV.
The Engine appears ok. The Gearbox is ok except for 3rd and 2nd gear. Noise is more pronounced on the over run. 3rd is the worst.

What part/s is/are usually the underlying problem with the 3rd gear issue please.

Can you confirm the bearing dimensions. Ebay is saying
Bearing 6304NR(I.D 20mm x O.D 52mm x W 15mm) whereas another seller said 25 x 52 x 15.

Ofcourse I don't need to write this, because you all know..

First thing I do with a (unknown) gearbox is draining the oil...

Then have a good look at the old oil.. It can tell you everything about the condition of the gearbox.. (Unless the preowner did a fresh oilchange to cover it up)...

Is the oil about the amount it should be 0.9 liter (or is it much less) if it is less you know already there isn't looked after the gearbox..
How is the old oil looking.. If it is really black then alarm bells must ring..

Filter the oil and look for parts of bearing, synchomesh aso.. If you see any then you should execute Ken's stuff anyway...

At last (which you must do first) take a good look at the magnet of the drainplug,
are there bits and pieces on there then again you need to execute Ken's story..


But as Ken says, it takes you about an hour or so to put in some fresh bearings......

A big thanks to both of you. Indeed to all of you over the past few years.
I did change and check the oil. There were signs of metal on the drain plug.
The oil had emulsified where I had had the engine and gearbox pressure cleaned.

I thought before I hve the gearbox out again, I would do a trial run on the 2CV gearbox.
I have both covers off, but am at a loss as to how to get the rear bearing out! How do you guys do it. Can you please point me to a tool on the web if that is what is required.
I'm not put off by gearboxes having messed with both car and motorcycle ones in the past. The Diff is a challenge though. :)
One last thing (until I'm stuck agains :-) ) what value for money brand should I be looking at?

Change into 3rd gear...
Either push the middle selector rod towards the rear of the box, using a screwdriver, or temporarily refit the lid and move the top of the gearchange stalk towards the bell housing.
That should ease the bearing flange out of contact with the rear of the casing, then use a couple of screwdrivers to complete the removal.

When preparing the replacement bearing, don't forget to grind down (or file) the circlip so that it fits easily into the recess in the rear housing.
The circlip should be removed from the bearing whilst that's going on.

Re. quality of a bearing, you won't go far wrong with SKF, although I've also used Koyo and NTN without any problem.
'Normal' clearance type, not C3, btw.

On the 2CV box, both rear nuts could be turned with my fingers. It was the straking that stopped them falling off. I suspect this may have accounted for it beginning to get a bit noisy. :)
Think I'll tighten them, put it back together and try it.

Take a very very very good look at the rear-cover. When these nuts come loose they brake out the rear cover. So takea good look at the inside of the rear cover if they didn't damage the 2 cutouts at the inside, lookfor scratches the nuts could possibly have made, if so look for cracks in the alu cover....... and cracks will leak oil... and a gearbox without oil......
well you got the point I guess...
