You might get lucky.
I purchased an LNA gearbox from Viking years ago, unlnown history/condition, split the halfs to check it out to find it had freshish gasket goo and it all looked sparkly clean inside, clearly it had been rebuilt at some stage

I have an early AK gearbox (graphite bearing type) that I'm hanging onto as they're not awfully common. Condition is unknown but it's complete and everything rotates as it should. It's basically for spares in the future, I have no intention of doing anything with it in the foreseeable future, so how should I store it? I was thinking of taking the top off and filling it right up with oil to keep moisture out, is that sensible? |

To much oil will flow out along the front driveshaft and speedo connection i think. |

Strip it (which needs doing anyway before using it one day) oil everything and wrap in plastic bags. It is way too risky (when the day comes) to just fit it only to discover it needs overhauling |

Oil won't be a lot of use in the event of water ingress anyway, as it will just float! Drain it and spray with hot grease? |

Why would you loose the bits? Dive in with photos and take it easy step by step. I'll happily guide you through the process to the end. |
