I was just looking for a quick clarification on how the points assisted kits worked, are they essentially all the same, or are some cleverer than others?

I understand that some are just a 'relay', powering the coil when the points close, and switching it off when they open. These will eliminate the need to run unreliable condensers, but still leave the potential problem of coils over heating if the engine is left idling too long, or the ignition left on without the engine running.

The question is, are there any systems which only use the points to trigger the spark timing, where the coil charging time is controlled by the electronics and not the dwell angle of the points?
Or would that make the electronics much more complex? I guess the system would have to monitor the rpm to know when to start charging the coil.

And if all systems are essentially the same, is there anything to choose between them, and would any type work on any points ignition system on any engine?

This isnt particually relevant or helpful, but ive been told the yellow coils can catch fire if the ignition is left on

Do you mean the 'Harley' type yellow coil or the normal-looking solid-state coil with the yellow line around the centre?

Jools they all have the simple dwell, even lumenition so there is no coil shut down on standby, For those features your going to hae to go fully electronic with 123 or there is some other newer system 1,2 *something* that i seem to have heard about on here ...

You can also convert oroginal ignition to electronic, and then have original advance control with "smart" dwell control and coil shutdown...

I have used parts from Lada Samara (can't recall the model name on other countries), also that ignition module (that Remitel -unit) is from Lada. Funny enough, all ignition parts are from car made in Russia but in all electric parts is label "made in u.s.a"...

@Jasu, That's a good use of other parts. Like it a lot.
Have you used the Bosch unit? Crank or camshaft sensor.

That HALL-sensor is same in many distributors, and those Russian parts are full compatible with Bosch parts...


On my one project, I have tested to read original timing hole from flywheel by HALL-sensor from Opel sensor. In that photo, there was testing with Xm VR-both survive well there. But, if cranc has too much endplay, that isn't reliable solution, but without that it works well...



Those wirings on the ignition module -photo, they look horrible. I know. They aren't anymore like that, some rewiring has happened after that...

What part did you use for the 2cv rotor plate? (picture 2) ?
