The latest niggle with my car is that the steering wheel goes all wobbly when I drive over a particularly bad patch of road. This was more noticeable when potholes etc. where on the O/S of the car so that was the side I jacked up. I gave the wheel a shake at 12 and 6 o'clock (no play) and 9 and 3 o'clock where there was play in the track rod lever arm where it bolts to the swivel hub. I'm ashamed to say that in my hast to finish the car I pulled both the bolts and the double lock tab washer off my other car as the track rods were new, but you'll be pleased to here that I have ordered new bolts and new double lock tab washers which I be swapping over as soon as they arrive.

But is there a specified torque they should be or just FT?

Also I am hoping that it was my general incompetence which has meant the assembly is loose but it looks like the bolts haven't moved at all. I should point out that this has been made noticeable within lets say 30 miles, not long at all. So assuming the worst and the thread has been stripped from the swivel hub what does that mean that it's scrap or can it be re-tapped etc.?

Thanks. Sam.

P.S: On the subject of all things front axel it sounds like there's a chick cheeping in the O/S/F wheel that sounds more pained as I go faster. I know It's near to Easter and all but really! Though this was only made apparent on my latest return journey and it was wet. could that be track rod related or possibly something like a lack of grease in the bearing?

see 2cvgb post

10-14 ftlb

the screws should be 10.9s if not they stretch and loosen

if the swivel hub threads are damaged then they can be taped out to M8 and allen cap screws 12.9s can be fitted and the torque doubled

taping the threads best achieved with the bearing out but it can be done using proper 3 stage taps and finished with an adapted bottom tap that has no lead what so ever. The bolts need carefull cutting to make sure you get full thread engagement without bottoming out.

Ive done this to all my road cars and to 24hr race cars and it proves to be stronger than welding the steering arm.

Wow, that's impressive. No steering wheel wobble with that setup I bet!
