So what could this be, if I hold the front wheel (o/s) at lets say in the six o'clock position and give it a wiggle up and down I have no movement - if I hold it at quarter to three and give it a wiggle I have a bit of play in it - steering arm/ wheel bearing what do you think?

Thanks

Simon

When I have had the same fault, it's always a new bearing that has been diagnosed at Richard Daltons...

A wheel bearing that's shot would give an equal amount of play in any direction, wouldn't it?
The play that Simon describes could be kingpin (unless 'Belgian' arms are fitted), track rod end or rack.
The only way to be certain which of these (or which combination of these possible causes) is responsible would be by inspection.
That works best with one person doing the pushing & pulling and another getting close to the machinery...

Sorry should have said Belgium Arms fitted - if it is a wheel bearing (sorry to ask) can it be changed in situ or is it hub off job

IF it's the wheel bearing it can be changed in situ, but it is a hub off job! The hub being the roundy roundy thing the wheel bolts to. The swively bit that does the steering and has the bearing located in it can stay on the end of the arm on the car.
But I'd be most inclined to suspect the steering rack or track rod end.

Sounds like worn out ball bearing.
