Post subject:  Leaky brake cylinder?

I have a loud grindy rear brake noise and I'm second pressing the pedal, I'm presuming this is indicative of a leaky rear cylinder?

Is this a STOP-USING-CAR-NOW type issue or more of a wait-until-its-warm-and-dry-and-do-it-then type issue? I've done about 4k since I first noticed it...

Look at the brake fluid level. Is it dropping? Maybe the lining is used up so you hear metal againt metal or just badly centered brake shoes making noise. Also wheater conditions can cause noise. Best is to remove the drums for a look. 5 min job. Good luck

Cheers Peter, I'll have a look when I get the chance - I've never actually looked at the rear brakes on my D*lly in 7 years and 60,000 miles... should probably take a peak.

My bet would be seized pivots leading to the lining seperating from and falling off (at least) one of the shoes. I reckon you would be wise to place an order with your preferred parts supplier for a pair of cylinders and a set of shoes now..!

i had a man who complained about noise when braking too. He used his brakes so long the disc brake blocs were worn so thin they fell out and he was braking on the calipers that were worn away about half already...
