Post Substitute for paper gaskets?
Apologies for coming back to my H-van, again, but ....

I'm just about to drop the sump to clean out the years of accumulated muck inside - my 1964 HY-72 is the old type that does not have an external oil filter. The sump should have two cork semi-circular gaskets at each end (and I have new ones) and - I think! - a paper gasket for the much larger square surfaces that at present squirt oil all over the place.

Is there a jointing paste/liquid etc that will do the job better than another very thin but original paper gasket? I can't help but think there is something better than the Red Hermetite that I just smear all over the engines of the old BL cars I was "servicing" in the 1960s.

Suggestions definitely welcome.

Or get hold of some gasket paper and cut your own. The slightly thicker stuff works well.

Thanks - I had considered making my own - it can't be that difficult, can it? However I don't know how thick the original paper was and the special gasket papers seem to come in quite a lot of thicknesses.

And it goes without saying that after posting the original question I found that a made-to-measure gasket - which looks about right - was available at not too steep a price.

Perhaps I'll try belt and braces - paper and the Hylomar Blue. It can't give a worse result than what I have at present.

Thanks Geert - I've now ordered Der Franzose's paper gasket, and a tube of the Hylomar Blue too. Funnily enough, they don't seem to have it in the Aurillac branch of Feu Vert.

RTV silicon seems to be about the best 'gasket in a tube', imho.

Not really a fan of blue hylomar, it skins over really quickly making it hard to get an even smear, though it does usually seal fine, particularly between castings.

I'd used Red Hermetite for more years than I care to remember, but now that it's no longer available, wish I'd switched to Wellseal sooner...
It's perfect for sealing the joints between crankcase halves, also gearbox main casing to bell housing and rear cover joints.
