 steering rack upgrade...
So iv'e been thinking about something to keep Vikings blood pressure up as we don't hear from him much anymore The steering rack in a 2cv is a weak point with raiding and daily use, my opinion only. Looking on the web there seem to be some inner tie-rod type racks from the late 80's but most are power steering... Does anyone know of a manual rack and pinion with inner tie rods that could be adapted to a 2cv? This one is from a Dodge Intrepid(?) note that it is power assist. or 91 Ford explorer, manual... But further googling only shows Power Assist units.... I guess I will have to search the wreaking yards. Harley

I'd also considered similar ideas, was trying to find a way to move the rack that didn't result in bump steer, but didn't come up with an answer. As well as 106s, one of the older generations of vw polo are similar.

106 or saxo suggests itself. What's wrong with having power steering? Vauxhall corsa and fiat seicento have electric columns that are adapted frequently for kit cars and stuff.

JOOLZ! ya bloody legend, feel like we've not heard from you for a while I thought bump steer was when you use stationary objects such as curbs, rails, trees or people to help you make a turn... I will have to research it more. Just realised that is in relation moving the location of the rack, my idea was to cut the cross tube open and 'integrate' a modern rack and pinion into it, obviously keeping the torsional strength between the suspension arms. I though about electric power assist steering but its more about the play and wear and tear associated with the 2cv rack. cheers!

Looking at my 60 years old snail, I'm really surpriced how good it is, it is that the former owner messed up (didn't torque any screws) but I have retorqued everything and now it is without play once again... This evening is my new maiden trip so will report then... The only thing I want to mention again is that the older 2cv's are of much better quallity then the newer once, let alone the stuff you can buy in (2cv shops) Take a look at the square sliders which are made of brass nowadays, so within 7000km they are gone again..... Take a look at the dutch dyane super duper (width Dyane) it has powersteering almost finished in his car...

 Re: steering rack upgrade...
Mine is a 1988 built 2CV with the late factory rack fitted. I have a 1960's Quillery steering wheel fitted in place of that crappy black plastic one that Citroen used for the 1980's car which gives a nice light feel to the steering.
