There was nothing wrong with the steering rack when I took it off, what should I do in the way of preventative maintenance prior to refitting it? I don't fancy anything expensive or in depth, but how does one go about greasing it up ready for another 30 years? Anything essential I need to do?

you can grease nipple it with the pinion in situ, just drill it out very carefull and do the last bit with a greased bit to catch the swarf - just let it break thru to the pinion area and no more - tap it out to m6 an fit a nipple The slider needs to come off for a M6 nut to get braized on the outside between the pins you have to use a wadding punch to make a clearance hole in the rubber.

cant be arsed with the photos they are in the archive somewhere

Here you go, Russ...

'Exporting to USA' version.

& 'just another chassis change' version.

The one on the slider is most useful; a rack which might seem borderline when dry, has hardly any play after a good dose of grease.

It's lasted 35 years so far, I don't see why it shouldn't.
