Post subject:  Alternator for M4 engine

I'm completely new to the M4 engine so need some advice please...

My recently acquired Ami 6 break broke down today when the alternator seized. I'd like to know what my options are for replacing it or whether I need to get the seized one refurbished.

Am I right in thinking new replacements aren't available for this engine? (It's 12 volt)

Thanks
Ru

the bearings in them are standard sizes so can be had from the likes of "Bearing Boys" or "Simply Bearings" for a couple of ££, a brush set off Roy and hey ho saved yourself a fortune.

I trip over several m4 engines on a daily basis, they are all part of Sams master plan to ruin old 2cvs with the piss-poor flaccid performance of the archaic and sloth like qualities of these museum pieces. My suggestion is that you replace the whole engine with something a little more useful like a 9:1 engine from an ami8 or Dyane, the latter of which is suitable only as a parts donor for the vastly superior 2cv and Ami.

Alternatively, it might be worth speaking to Sam as he may have a spare.

Thanks for the tips... I'll try Sam

The engine is going to be replaced eventually for something much more powerful.

Well you know where to send it when you do ;)

Will have a look for an alternator.

I love the M4 in my ripple!! It may be a little "tuned" with shed ported heads  :ugeek:  and a Barbour 2 into 1 + mini silencers. Other than that it is standard and it runs f :o kken great.

Ru, I rebuild my big 6V alternator which came with my M4. If you come to the 24 hours and want to have a look together (+ probably fix it) feel free to bring it with you. As long as Louis and Paul keep their car on the track I should have spare time.

I totaly agree with Bart. I have one of the first 602 engines (1963) in an Ami 6 and I love every cc of it...

It has fine torque and will run more then 50 to the gallon with ease....

The latest model with the big carb (almost 45mm single butterfly) has (for me) more torque then a 2cv 6 engine.... between 2000 and 4000 rpm..... and very easy operated heatexchangers......

For me these are the finest a type engines.... they are just easy riders....

Ooh a bit of lurve for the M4..

Don't really have a problem with the engine performance. I like single choke heavy fly wheeled engines... My drummer just loves them hills ;)

No luck yet finding a usable replacement alternator but hopefully it's being fixed now. However if unfixable then I will be gutted and travel in the 4x4.

Bart - Thanks. I am looking after onboard cameras again for the 24hr so will see you there either way..

with a bit of fiddeling you can use a modern alternator+ regulator, done that on a 425

You just need to be sure the belt wheels are lined up properly...
