I was a bit of a twat and forgot to remove the rod from the crankcase hole when I was rechecking the timing - went to start the engine, heard a CLUNK, scratched my head for a minute then noticed what I'd done.

There seem to be dire warnings about removing the rod everywhere I look (such as "FOR GOD'S SAKE REMOVE THE ROD BEFORE GOING ANY FURTHER!" on the wessex ducks website) but the engine started fine after I removed it.

Could I have done some invisible damage that will rear its ugly head in the future?

Happened to me last week on a costumer car mounting 1-2-Spark, normally no harm is done, I Always use a drill 6mm and they brake (good drill) or bend (loosy drill) Take a good look if all the pieces of the rod are gone so no more harm can be done......

Unlikely that the engine is damaged but if you used a drill bit I doubt it'll be much good for drilling holes any more.

I used to have a rod with a hole in on my key ring so When the rod was in the hole so was my ignition key and I couldn't accidentally start it, seemed sensible at the time.

I've done the same trick myself .....I always used an aluminium tent peg .....they bend quite easily,so no harm done.

If you think about it, the starter motor's torque is transmitted direct to the flywheel, which either shears the drill bit or bends the rod, so the engine never notices a thing.
It's more nuisance value than anything else, having to dig out a bent rod...

Btw, if you use Tippex to mark the flywheel, it'll be a while before you have to repeat the exercise.
