Hello, (again), Gearbox query this time. (ODTAA!) My 1986 2CV which I bought last year, shudders when pulling away. (Did from day one of ownership). There is also a slight vibration at a certain slowish speed, which I thought was a problem with the carb/ignition, but I now think it is mechanical. I have checked the drive-shafts and engine/g/box mountings. I replaced the engine, (old one had a nasty knock), together with a complete new clutch, but it didn't cure the vibration. It's not a big problem other than I remember reading that such a vibration could spell g/box woes. If so, what sort of woes are we talking about. Is it checkable in situ. I have a spare box, but before changing, is there any advice? Taeverso, Chris |

Could be a damaged shaft that goes from the box into the engine... |

Could just be clutch judder. Modern replacement clutches are made from shitty stuff and can't cope with transfering the massive 29bhp and torque from a 2CV engine to the gearbox. I've had two Valeo clutches fitted and both have developed judder. |

But, was the spigot bearing replaced when the clutch was done, also was there any sign of gear oil leaking forwards along the input shaft? A worn spigot bearing or oil contamination of the friction material will both cause judder. Jonathan wrote: Could just be clutch judder. More revs as you lift your foot off the clutch. Mine judders at low rpm. |

Thanks for the replies. There is no oil leakage from the output shaft, and when I changed the clutch I checked for play at the shaft end: I don't remember much movement there at all. Other than the shuddering, the box is quiet and the syncros are fine. Ken, how would I access a worn bush: how much play is 'too much'. Thanks again. Chris |

at a couple of ££ just replace it with any "Oiltite" type bearing they are widley available as its a standard size the oil seal is also the same as the output shaft of all those Hondas and Fondas ( cheap Chinese clones) engines that power everything from garden machinery to small carts ) or you can just get it from the parts suppliers with a healthy "convenience" tax |
