Post subject:  Problems with my recon engine please help!!
Hi all, having a big problem with this recon engine; done by my dad with the higher compression pistons barrels etc
The problem is going up hills it will go up most of it and loose all power and then recover after a few minutes idiling and be fine untill the next hill.
I decided that it might be the fuel pump not giving the engine enough fuel as the pump did not fit that well, so replaced that from ecas, took the carb apart completly replaced all the jets etc got all the crap out of it and it just does the same, its very annoying as it will just not climb any hill and will sometimes just stop, But on flat road it will wizz along and keep up with all the other cars.
Maybe over heating? although my Dad says it doesnt feel like it.
Its so annoying i think i might just buy another engine, anyone got a half decent one for sale, that will at least climb hills? :lol:
Its not like weve got to the abusing part of the offroad with this engine yet so theres no reason.
I have replaced liturally everything i must have done carb changes 10 times at least and just no luck.
any help will be much appreciated,

From the symptoms, I'd reckon that the problem is to do with insufficient fuel delivery, maybe a restriction in the line but most often it's an air leak at a section of rubber hose which has perished.
If you're unlucky, it will be the one nearest the fuel tank...

The test for this is quite straightforward.
Try driving up a steep hill and when the engine falters or misfires, stop immediately and check how much fuel there is in the float bowl.
If there's hardly any fuel in there, that would confirm where the problem lies.

Hi twoCyl, sounds like a very similar problem ive had with the 2nd engine in my car, it will sit at 70 absolutely fine on the flats and downhills... but the second i went uphill... you could feel it struggling when asking for more power... anything above 65 uphill it didnt like, but below 65 was fine! low enough to stop it overheating, but enough revs to keep the momentum up! i do believe your problem sounds the same, which is overheating, if you have the heater set to in the car, have a feel and you'll notice the temperature creeps up quite quickly!

Joe, 2cvs just won't do 70mph uphill. It's only a two cylinder engine and it just loses momentum, a 'heavy' flywheel does help, but not to that extent, most 80s cars have a 'lightened' flywheel to improve acceleration, at the expense of uphill pulling power.

PS:-When we are talking about uphill, I mean proper hills, not just a slight incline.

I dont really think its over heating as the engine wasnt on max out revs.. i will check fuel lines tommorow, anything else i should check for? its so damn annoying hours spent on that engine and just no luck.

I had similar (if more pronounced) problems solved by a new set of spark plugs.

It was conking out on the flat too if flogged at the time.

Sounds like partial seizures, due to weak mixture and/or incorrect timing. Was the timing set statically or dynamically? :shock:
