So on my drive to work i noticed that the needle on my speedometer doesn't move up and down in the smooth fashion that it once did, but it tends to flicker up to the (I'm guessing) correct indicated speed, and then its really slow to move down to zero when i come to a stop.

Can anyone help? Thanks in advance

Buy a satnav or ignore it.

Haha, I don't have the kind of cash to spend on a sat nav right now. As much as I'd like to be able to ignore it, I'd quite like to know why it's doing it.

The cable might need a bit of lubrication...

That being the case lubricate from the bottom,so that the oil does not work it's way into the speedo head. This is the way I was taught many years ago, when I first started riding motorcycles :)

hi joe just to throw a spanner in the works its a relatively easy job to remove the cable from its housing at the gearbox end, theres a long bolt to undo then the whole circular housing pulls out
how the hell you get any lube into the cable from there is anathana to me
and its a right b,tard to relocate the cable housing and alighn the square cable end and the holding bolt
i would unscrew the dash, pull it forwards for acess
unscrew the speedo cable from the back of the speedo then pull the inner cable out
use thin oil then shove it back in turning it to relocate it into the drive

You can get access to the rear of the speedo if you take the battery tray out.

Makes it easier and you could dribble the lubricant down that way.

Which is fine if you have a LHD car...

Thanks for the tips ayjay, I was hoping that I could do this without touching the dash, it's a mess behind there!
