When rebuilding an old engine, how does one go about setting it up and bench testing it?

Can anyone give me a step-by-step to bench testing? I'm a complete novice. I've never tried it before, or even watched someone else doing one (a bench test, that is).

Okay, so I need an engine and a ratchet strap and something to lash the engine to, plus a battery and a fuel supply and an ignition. Any pitfalls?

Ratchet straps only needed if you're trying to impress onlookers... ;)
Some sort of cobbled together exhaust is handy, unless it's an early engine the with crossover type manifold.

Hey! you call my engine test boring!!?? :shock: :roll: 8-) :D

Anyway, it was a test of a motor that had been sleeping for 10 years.

For my test I had:
- Battery negative to ground on gearbox/engine.
- Batteri plus to starter
- Batteri plus to positive terminal on coil (red cable on picture)
- Coil negative terminal to ignition (blue cable on picture)
- Then short plus and the starter pin where the yellow cable is connected on the picture. I had the yellow and red thin cable going to my start button just for fun 8-) A few pictures:

I just sat my engine and gearbox assembly on top of a couple of tyres. It didn't need lashing down, as the tyres absorbed any movement. I had a crossbox attached, plus the rest of an old exhaust system to take the fumes out under the garage door (and to keep the neighbours happy). It's worth having a complete exhaust on so you can check more easily for any nasty engine noises.

If it had a 1-2-Spark ignition on it..... it would instantly looked diffrent ;) ;) :oops: :oops:

How long do these engines last for?? I'm pretty impressed at 64BHP, that's pretty much modern high performance (hot hatch or sporty saloon) standard in terms of BHP/litre.
