How do I stop the graphite thrust bearing on an old drummer tin-top gearbox squealing - i know i have to drip some oil down through the tiny 'brass' pipe with the little cup to fill it....but what oil do i use and is it possible to use too much?

Russell suggested ATF or 3in1 but didn't get back to me on which to use and i can't find it anywhere in the haynes or Autobook

Sorry, I must've forgotten.

I *think* I soaked mine in ATF for a little bit, but it was so long ago I can't really recall.

I've just been through a couple of 1970's RTA books and they don't even mention the little oiler!

I'm not sure it should be squealing, mine had a lot of friction and never made a sound. I wouldn't dribble too much in, just enough to fill the cup and watch it drain away, hopefully that will cure it. Tipping too much in could cause the plate to become contaminated.

I'm worried that by squealing it will be wearing down too fast - as you know it's a bit of a pain splitting the engine / box on an Ami

as a rule - is ATF a particularly well refined oil - 'good quality' for want of a better phrase????

it's strange how 'the little brass cup' isn't mentioned anywhere...i've googled a few things and there's not a sausage

If it is sqealing when you put your foot on the clutch I'd imagine it is wearing down quite quickly. Maybe worth making sure the hooked ands on the fork which hold the bearing aren't coming into contact with the clutch, the one that was in my car was quite worn and showed signs of having been in contact there.

I can't really be sure of the oil I used, but the more I think about it, the more I think I used ATF, can't recall the weight or spec because I can't really recall using it!

4-5 drops of new clean motor oil.

saw some photos of your Amis - nice, what quirks are you finding with them - what are the tops of your doors like (where the chrome strip is pinned on)

yeah, mine aren't great either. will be doing some remedial work to them next week. do you think i'll have to replace the pins (posh rivets) with little standard pop rivets? also, what's the scope for cutting out welding these areas?
