Driving round Snetterton last weekend with a couple of photographers stood up in the back and my mate Dave on the passenger seat, when completely unprovoked going round the hairpin the car went up on two wheels. Why? Normal 2cvs don't fall over when you go round corners and mines 6" lower than normal. I drive it like a total hooligans most days and even when trying the most unstable thing I can achieve is a smidgen of oversteer, and with turning in sharply and backing off. Why doesn't it fall over when I do that, and why don't normal wobbly 2cvs fall over when people hang out the roof? What's going on here?

From learning some physics: the centre of gravity of the car was higher due to 2 people standing up and cornering moved the c.o.g outside the wheelbase, especially if they were leaning over the roof....?

Doubt it but I can't think why otherwise...

Were the photographers well built? Raised C of G?

I suspect that most normal rolly polly 2cv's are forgiving of a high c of g as the suspension has such long travel - I guess you may have also got stiffer suspension (or the coefficient of friction is higher) with lowered suspension so when you have a much lower c of g but a higher relative weight above that, if peeps are standing up, will make a much bigger effect than when you are hooning on your jack jones...

Causes of Corner Entry Oversteer include;

Severe rearward ride rate/roll resistance imbalance
Rear roll centre too high
etc, etc.

All bumpstops present and correct. Only suffers lift off oversteer if provoked.

Most front drivers wil tend to lift off oversteer, due to an imbalance in weight distribution, if, and it's a big if, they are provoked - a dab of brake in a tight bend, shitty rear tyres, poor tread on a wet road - in the main provided you don't screw with the suspension from stock settings, cars are remarkably stable in most conditions....

It's not the oversteer that bothers me, I know how all that works and that's fun, I don't understand why it went to roll over so easily with no provocation, yet unladen it has never ever done that, and how comes with all the dicking about that's gone on in normal 2cvs why I've never seen one do it before*


*except my old Dyane but I had two proper fat birds and a fridge freezer in that, and it was wound right up high.
