The teflon rubber in my gear-shift rod disintegrated out of unknown reason. Anybody out there with expertise in refitting a new one? I made up a rather temporary fix with some garden hose . . .

I understand they're a pain in the arse to replace.

Perhaps it's time to make the investment in a new assembly:

If not, then I've got details somewhere of a chap here in Blighty that rebushes them. He did mine and it's perfect and was quite cheap.

I've seen one way to do this, one is cutting the the lever arm on the straight section close to the gearbox end, changing the bushes and then welding the lever back together. The only pitfall I foresee is the aliment of the shaft after, but not an insurmountable problem with a bit of thought. I would braze mine back together with a sleeve brazed over the joint, mainly as my welding is crap :-)

the guides can,t be replaced someone probably used oil to lube and they rotted away

talcum powder should have been used instead

As said earlier, there's a fella in 2cvgb who does them, I sold him a load of slide assemblies.

Cut, remove, refit by collapsing rubber and bush. Refit and weld.
Voila
