Hi all,

Rebuilt the engine with Burton Big Bore kit and Dyane blower, best it's ever gone well worth it!

I'd like to fit a gauge to let me know when I am up to temperature before putting my foot down on cold mornings and if I'm overheating going up big hills overloaded with 4 and a tailer at maximum revs for prolonged periods of time.

Considering two options: the Ecas Falcon aircraft type cylinder head temperature Gauge, or an oil filter adapter ring to allow senders for a duel oil temp./pressure gauge.
Also, as the wiring is in place for the charlston style dash battery charge indicator I was going to fit one, but is it a voltmeter or an ammeter I should get?
Any recommendations appreciated.

I have had all three of those gauges and each option has it's benefit.
Cylinder Head Temp will give you the quickest feedback on engine temp but will read at operating temperature before the oil has reached it's sutiable temp and viscosity. It msy only be in the area of 5-10mins before the oil temp catches up be maybe still enough time over rev a cool engine...
I really like having an oil pressure sender in a 2cv, it has saved me in the past when the o-ring on the oil filter popped out...
I luv the mechanical look and simplicity of the dual CHT gauge but if your not paying attention you can still cook it, whereas with an oil temp guage you can get one with an in built warning light.
to adapt an oil sandwich plate you will need a brass reducer to match thethread on the plate, I have a post on here somewhere which links to them, very cheap just need to know what to look for.
The reducer and sandwich plate also alows for a larger oil filter which can further increase cooling.
If you want a simple answer don't both and just enjoy the experienve and keep your foot on the floor until you can smell oil burning, then the engine is overheating.

Just noticed the ecas gauge is non illuminated.

Looking for a universal joint, so I can drop down the steering wheel to get a better view of the gauges. Any one now where I can get one?

normally the oil that drips off the rear crank seal burns off when my crossbox reaches temp - you can smell it. No need for a UJ in the steering column with that little mod

Ami stearing columns used to give up 2 UJs but are alas now as rare as a rare thing
One of the early Golfs or Polos was rumored to have the same spline count as the spigot on the rack but so far no one has found the elusive thing

EvilBen put a couple in his steering column - you cold ask him, which would be the easiest solution ( other than putting the gauge where you can see it).

Both of the Ami joints will fit and the lower one of a Visa will fit, at least from the 2-cylinder versions.

mehari had UJs also i think, don't the partsuppliers have those steering columns? For the burton they use one too.

Ebay has all sorts of old aircraft instrumentation - it's the senders / voltage requirements that have so far put me off.
