how urgently do i need to buy a new one, and is it an easy job to fit??

well the oil has never leaked out when i owned it.....

it must explain why the suspensions slightly higher on one side (in and half) i thought it was weight of battery or something..... (as the side battery is on is slightly lower)

also how long would it take to do, and is it something an 2cv ameteur like me can acheive... what sort of oil also?

Have a read through the first part of this thread. All is revealed!

More stupid quesions about springs:

I fitted four 2cv rear springs into my cross cars cans. they weren't identical though, one pair had one less coil than the other and was about 5mm shorter. The wire thickness looked to be the same. Which of these will be harder, I'm assuming the one with less coils?

Yep,
if wire diameter and OD of the spring itself are the same for both pairs, the pair with fewer coils will be stiffer.

Shorter equals stiffer as well, but 5mm less probably won't have much significance compared to the increase attributable to the difference in the number of turns...

I'm going to be investigating my AKS400 suspension soon - are the differences between it and standard 2cv's suspension just a matter of different dimensions etc? Or are there any fundamental differences in the working of it?

No, 400s are as per normal 2cv.

Acads, Supers (and late 8s?) have the cans mounted rigidly, so no front-rear interaction.

Adrian,
400s changed over to 'fixed' cans in 1976, iirc.

The 'fixed' type is better for out and out load carrying capacity, but the 'floating' variety is better for driver comfort, I reckon... ;)
