 Winter Cold Starting Woes
Here in Melbourne its cold and wet. My 2cv normally starts reasonably well in any conditions but this winter is being more recalcitrant than I would like.
I think ive checked most things: Plenty of petrol being pumped to the carby, Spark plugs replaced, Air filter cleaned and re-oiled, Ignition timing via 123 checked, Valve clearances checked, low tension and high tension wires look ok. I will check the connections on the back of the ignition switch tonight. Once its warm it runs and starts well. Is there anything ive missed? thanks
Ian

 Re: Winter Cold Starting Woes
What's your cold start procedure Ian? Hope you're not sitting there pumping the throttle in an attempt to get it to fire? Normally from cold, its full choke only and it should start, then adjust engine speed using choke only. How old's the petrol, by the way, as here in the UK it's absolute cr@p compared with even five years ago and I find that it varies considerably between stations. I get best running (and cold starting) from BP.

 Re: Winter Cold Starting Woes
Ian, set spark plug gaps to 0.6 mm/24 thou and use the bl@@dy choke... Last UK winter, I had a couple of cars in with 'poor cold starting', only to find that the choke cable was seized on one and the fast idle cam (hence the choke) was seized on the other. Both drivers were old enough to have known better than to try starting in sib-zero conditions without using the choke. ken

Always worth checking the compression. It takes two minutes to do, especially if you're taking the plugs out anyway.

 Re: Winter Cold Starting Woes
Thanks Viking Bastard - only 50%???
start up is choke out only
The petrol is fresh and ok, I fill-up every second week. The battery is fine, turns over reasonably well, I think a compression check is in order
