Post subject: | Screaming gearbox / or not |
Hi all As a further to my putting oil in the gearbox thread: viewtopic.php?f=7&t=4844 I have done this now but my problem remains. When idling or in 1st and 2nd there is no problem. The issue is if one goes towards 6000 rpm in 3rd there is a rattle in the direction of the gearbox. Clearly I cannot check this with my head under the hood at 40mph. Then in 4th the rattle comes back at 60mph plus. This time more intense, more like a scream. I have been under the car to look at the possibility of loose bolts or plates but can find none. So now I am stumped. I am not sure if this is the sign of an old worn gearbox or just a loose something or something worse?! Cheers! Justin |

Loose baffles in crossbox? Don't think you need to rev the nuts off it. If it happens at 6000, don't take it above say 5500. ![]() |

Sounds to me as though one of the bearings is close to disintegrating. so time for a gearbox repair before it reaches the point where it's imploded and all that's left is a collection of spare parts for other gearboxes. As Knightley says, there's absolutely no point in revving the nuts off these engines through the gears, unless you haven't yet grown out of the 'boy racer' stage... ![]() ken |

any signs of "glitter" in the oil when you change it and its the box needs changing to allow it to be stripped and new bearings fitted. |

I see thanks. No the example of 6000 rpm was simply to explain as the revs increase (rather than redlining it in each gear). To avoid hearing the noise I would have to not go over 2000 rpm in each gear. The rattle only being evident then. However the whine is there when cruising in 4th or up in the revs in 3rd. Strange thing is the rattle is more like a plate is loose than the sound of mechanicals. Though I suspect it must be gearbox related. I also assume, though don't know, that the gearbox is original, thus 30 years old. |
