Post subject:  Driveshaft - Universal joint

I have both driveshafts (hub side) now off the car. The bearings for the universal joint slid out easily from the hub side but the drive shaft side does not want to play at all.

I think they may have closed together the two ends as I got one set of bearings pressed in but it is about 1mm to 1.5mm to short and the cir clips will not go in. And all this messing around has made the end cap on the driveshaft pop out (the one that stops all the grease coming out, it is normally welded in)

So what are my options - is there a way of prising the two ends apart - this could weaken it altogether. Does anyone have a spare set lying around ;) It has 12 grooves to fit on to the lower part of the driveshaft.

I also need a couple of new universal joints too (I was so close at getting these in but close is not enough).

Has anyone ever done this job and could give a few hints

I think this is the part -

Take them appart to see that a needle roller is trapped in side., very easily done as on my prop shaft they are held in place with grease.

Yep, did that.

Trouble is with taking them in an out I think it is weakening the drive shaft ends. As I mentioned the cap in between the prongs has already come out due to bashing and pressing.

I think it will be buy new time

You need to be very clean and very careful. I've done a few over the years, not an easy job but possible. If all fail, dismantle both out put hubs and ship them to me. I'll fit them for nix.
Be careful not mixing the diff shims (setting the preload and backlash)

It is purely the drive shaft ends - putting them onto the hubs was easy, near enough a push fit with my thump (with the aid of a small hammer).

I will take you up on that, I will send them this week as I start work today (my 6 month holiday is now over) and will not have a spare day until October.

Cheers
