The gear lever on my dad's mehari kept spinning on the stub - on closer inspection it was worn to hell at the base, so forked out the ludicrous price cassis charges for a new one and the clamp to hold it on.

The bolt that holds it all together is giving me issues though - trial and error has shown it to be an m7, but i've stripped 3 trying to tighten the nut enough to hold the lever solid to the stub.

Are you supposed to use a hardened bolt or something? :?: :?: :?:

You may find that the spline is buggered maybe on both the vertical lever and on the lid too.

Swift replies, chaps!

I'll get the top off of the gearbox tomorrow and have a squint. Was hoping to NOT spend 5 hours scouring the garage for that bloody spring, but if needs must...

No need to take the lid off the gearbox, just clean up the bit sticking out of the top and see if the (very fine) splines are still in evidence.

The M7 bolt should have been 10.9 grade, but knowing the standard of replacement parts from MCC, they probably sent you an 8.8 bolt.

If the spline is still in evidence, you could ease the hole in the clamp and use an 8mm diameter Allen bolt, 12.9 grade.
If that doesn't grip, it's time for a replacement gearbox lid.

p.s. Can you weld? It would be a lot cheaper to post about 100mm length of the lower end of a gear stalk which hasn't been fretted away by being left too loose.

Ken, you were right - the splines on the stub coming from the gearbox were worn away. swapped it with the top plate from a spare 2cv gearbox and all seems well now!

Only thing that seems not quite right is that it now takes a bit of grunt to disengage from first gear. All the rest are fine going in/out.

Any ideas? I'm stumped.

it could be that the stick is orientated/clamped on the wrong spline
or that the clutch cable needs adjusting so that the clutch disengages more

There isn't a king spline the bolt fits in a keyway. Adjusting the clutch is always a good move but ill adjusted clutch wont cause the pinch bolt to loosen

Maybe something is amiss with the alignment of your exchanged top plate or something moved on the swop over...
