Post subject:  Painting Advice
So I bought some paint. But I have no clue what to do with it.

The primer I am pretty sure I can work that out ;) But the paint and the hardener I am not too sure. Do I mix the hardener to the paint before spraying ? Do I only mix enough for the job and how much is that... I assume that only comes with a bit of experience :oops:

The hardener (Durcisseur CP900) is only 1/2 litre and says it is for 1 kg of paint, so from that I calculate it is a 2:1 mix :D. Does it have to be exact or can I just pour some guestimates into the paint hopper - I don't want to start wasting half the paint on the sides of mixing bowls.

I just want to spray a couple of small parts to try things out. Not done any spraying (other than out of a can) so want to get off to a decent start - plus the paint is bloody expensive.

You should mix the paint and harderer before spraying, but only as much as you need at that moment.
So it is difficult first time to know what amount you need.

It is a measuring cup to mesure paint and hardener .And it is cheap ! But you have the exact amount of harderer to the exact amount of paint.
Mix the paint before you pour it into the measuring cup and mix the paint and hardener again as it is in the measuring cup

Depending upon the weather temp etc, you may have to add more thinners. Maybe I am telling you how to suck eggs, but the first top coat should be a mist coat and allowed to go semi dry before the next coat(s) are applied. This should avoid runs etc.
Big warning, if you have used any zinc plated or zinc spray - get some EXPERT advice on etch primers BEFORE using the undercoat, else in a year or twos time you will have more than tears in your paintwork.
But don't let this put you off - go for it Oh and get a good spray mask - its nasty stuff to breath in.

So this is 2 pack then!! - I have always wondered what it was :oops:

I have bought myself a pretty decent mask with two filter thingies so it should be OK. I am not planning on doing a huge amount at the moment and tomorrow I will be taking the stainless steel window frames I bought yesterday to the powder coaters as I want that stuff to get everywhere on the frames.

I might practice on a couple of Labinal side indicators that I just bought off ebay for a tenner.

Thanks for the help - it is tough cutting through all the jargon when you have never done it before.

Don't want to be a party pooper but I would think twice about Two Pack without an air fed mask

Hi Tripyrenees.

If that is 2 pack is it the isocyanate free kind if not you will need a better mask than a "
decent mask with two filter thingies ".

The paint particles react with the moisture in the lungs and hardens.

The consenus is when using 2K use an air-fed mask.

By the way I love ReneII great looking motor.

Agree. There are some pretty good disposable masks from 3M, which will give you up to 40hrs of use. That will save you major expense if you're only planning a single project.

Don't forget to put ear plugs in too. Apparently, 2-pack can cause serious irritation via your earholes!
