Technically yes, more air would come into the cab, but given that the cowlings etc aren't air-tight, its not going to be a huge difference. Just make sure the vent hoses are in good condition etc. I find that my 'heating' is best after a good 10-15 miles or so.

Also, check that the flaps which direct the air either into the cab or out the dump tubes aren't bent and therefore not sealing properly. Matt concannon also sells repair kits for the foam seal on these flaps which helps with air leakage.

No worries. I've found with the more recent vent hoses i've gotten from ecas (ICCCR), the foam isn't attached to the cardboard outer very well, so when you shove it on, the foam sorta squishes up inside the tube and stops it sealing around the exchanger/bulkhead thingy. Easy to fix with 5 minutes and some UHU glue, but worth watching out for.

I tried that, but found it making the car colder, maybe too much air for the heat exchangers to cope with?

I doubt you'd notice a difference. New heater tubes and foam on the flaps in the exchangers would make more difference. Or put a coat on.

Well there's your problem! Just splash out on a new set from uncle roy and reap the rewards. Just remember and check that the foam is well attached as I mentioned above.
