Tried to fire up the 2cv today after the rebuild.

Got the starter tuning the engine... all seemed OK till a big spark from the loom stopped play. No obvious signs of chaffing, and the spark seemed to come from the area where the two wires exit for the starter motor.

Any ideas what might have caused this? I will be investigating tomorrow... my guess is 30 year old wiring is getting tired and something shorted out.

Cheers,
Aidan

Also contemplating getting a new front loom... how difficult is it to fit one, bearing in mind I'm an electrical dunce.

Did you leave a spanner on the air filter that could have dropped down and shorted across the starter when you were spinning the engine over?

check to see if any fuses have blown
also are the battery terminal clamps tight?
is the big earth lead securely connected to the bolt on the gearbox?(thats VERY important!
its a bit difficult to diagnose on a forum

Loom is easy provide you plug new one in as you remove old one

Lots of pics and lots of notes help

First of all I'd check that its not the starter thats given up - " No obvious signs of chaffing, and the spark seemed to come from the area where the two wires exit for the starter motor."

And then hit it with a feckoff great hammer.
Wont do owt, but feels good.
Gimme a bell if phone assistance required.

My name is Andy, although at weekends I add an 'M' and become Mandy. Of all the drag queens in all the world I have the most questionable personal hygiene of them all. My penis is very, very small too. On the positives I'm a great dancer and love to frolic with my other tranny friends in summer meadows in my prettiest frocks. I have terrible syphilis, however.

I've put that right way round, mate...

Rumble - for a FBSpark to escape, something's gotta be shorting out. That "joint" - is it anywhere near something that could be earthing? Was the alternator's big wire connected up, or just dangling around?
